Mithral Cermet

Mithral Cermet is a special variation of Mithral created in ancient days, which has recently been rediscovered.

Mithral Cermet comes in three forms, which require different methods of processing, but all are used primarily to create armour.

Basic Cermet

Basic Cermet is made in a way that is relatively similar to Mithral working, the metal being heated to extreme temperatures and worked by a smith, who beats various clays and materials into the mix while advanced magical rituals are performed. Basic Cermet is naturally off-white but can be coloured using materials mixed in during creation.

The material extrudes a thin slimy layer which feels wet and sticky and which can help absorb impacts in the same way that normal under-armour would. This slimy layer gives any armour created with Basic Cermet the “Comfortable” trait.

Due to the effort and expense of making Basic Cermet, it is often enchanted and may or may not use a Wall of Force effect to grant better vision with the helmet.

Type of Basic Cermet Item Item Cost Modifier
Light Armour +2.000 gp
Medium Armour +5.000 gp
Heavy Armour +10.000 gp
Shield +2.000 gp
Other 1000 gp + 500 gp / lbs

This is following the prices for Mithral, +1000 for the trait and additional weight reduction

Effects

  • Any items made out of Basic Cermet weigh 10% of their normal weight (must normally be metal)
  • Any armour made out of Basic Cermet has the “Comfortable” trait
  • Most armours made out of Basic Cermet are one category lighter for normal purposes (Heavy becomes Medium, Medium becomes Light, but Light stays Light)
  • Spell Failure chance for armours and shields made of Basic Cermet are decreased by 10%
  • Maximum Dexterity for armours and shields made of Basic Cermet are increased by 2
  • Armour Check Penalties for armours and shields made of Basic Cermet are lessened by 3 (minimum 0)
  • Weapons made from Basic Cermet count as masterwork, and thus have +1 to hit
  • 30 hit points per inch of thickness
  • hardness 15

In effect this is the same as Mithral, but with a 90% instead of a 50% weight reduction, and a free “Comfortable” trait

Example Items

Advanced Cermet

Unlike Basic Cermet, which is forged much like normal metal, Advanced Cermet requires a full scale magic-powered foundry. The mithral is melted and mixed with various clays and other materials while in molten state as a magical ritual is performed. Advanced Cermet is naturally darkish terracotta, but its colour can be altered by adding different pigments into the mix during its molten state.

Advanced Cermet armours require an inner suit to be worn for the armour to be effective. Normally, a Basic Cermet under armour is used for this, and as such these are included in the below price. The Basic Cermet under armour gives the whole armour the “Comfortable” trait. The wearer can, however, choose to wear a different type of under armour, or combine it with other types of under armour such as traditional cloth padding. In either case, the under armour is specifically made to accompany the Advanced Cermet armour, and the two together count as a single item while in use and with respect to echantments.

Advanced Cermet is heavier than Basic Cermet, but the material is far harder and stronger than most materials. Weapons made of Advanced Cermet are exceptionally sharp and hard, giving them some special properties as well.

Due to the effort and expense of making Advanced Cermet, it is always enchanted at the time of creation.

Type of Advanced Cermet Item Item Cost Modifier
Ammunition +120 gp
Light Armour +10.000 gp
Medium Armour +20.000 gp
Heavy Armour +30.000 gp
Weapon +4.000 gp + 1000 gp / lbs
Shield +5.000 gp

This is following the Adamantine prices x2

Effects

  • Any items made out of Advanced Cermet weigh 50% of their normal weight (must normally be metal)
  • Most armours made out of Advanced Cermet are one category lighter for normal purposes (Heavy becomes Medium, Medium becomes Light, but Light stays Light)
  • Armours made out of Advanced Cermet grant the wearer a damage reduction. Light armours grant 1/-, Medium armours grant 2/- and Heavy armours grant 3/- (using the state before it is reduced by the above effect)
  • Spell Failure chance for armours and shields made of Advanced Cermet are decreased by 10%
  • Maximum Dexterity for armours and shields made of Advanced Cermet are increased by 2
  • Armour Check Penalties for armours and shields made of Advanced Cermet are lessened by 3 (minimum 0)
  • Weapons made from Advanced Cermet bypass hardness when sundering weapons or attacking objects with a hardness less than 20.
  • Weapons made from Advanced Cermet count as masterwork, and thus have +1 to hit
  • 40 hit points per inch of thickness
  • hardness 20

In effect this is the same as a combined Mithral and Adamantine

Mithral Porcelain

Using secret cermet creation techniques from Clairmont combined with the secret of making Porcelain from Heisei allows for the creation of a unique material called Mithral Porcelain. After mixing Advanced Cermet with porcelain materials, a rough clay is created which can be moulded into shape. It is then baked for one week at extreme temperatures to harden the material.

The material properties of Mithral Porcelain vary depending upon the individual combination of materials and it is practically impossible to mass produce, both due to the difficulty of the work and magic involved and due to the extreme cost.

As Mithral Porcelain is especially well suited to receive Gestalt enhancements, it can be used to create unique Gestalt items, though each item of this nature requires unique special components and enchantments.
