Lau Mei-yin appears to be an attractive woman in her early twenties. Her appearance clearly speaks of her mixed chinese-english heritage. She normally wears her straight black hair in a pony tail. Together with her conservative clothes she presents the image of a very modest woman working at a financial firm, albeit it one with a nocturnal schedule.

Mei-yin, or Michelle as she promptly will correct unless Alastar Mac Caoileann addresses her like that, is an efficient secretary and assistant at Catai stock trading and financial services, where she takes messages and opens and closes the office whenever Alastar is not present.

Her youthful appearance is deceiving, as she was born in 1954, and is currently 38 years old. She was born and raised in Hong Kong, and is the younger sister of Lau Sin-feng. In 1975, when she was at the age of 23, her brother convinced her to sleep with Alastar so he could get a prestigious position – at least, that is what he told her. Her youthful appearance can be ascribed to her being a ghoul. Alastar fed her his blood for the first time in the beginning of 1976. Since then, she only had a dry spell of four months during her trip to Berlin (from December 1979 – March 1980).

Over the years, Mei-yin has become addicted to both the feeling of power and finesse that fills her whenever she partakes of Vitae, and to the experience of the Kiss. Her devotion makes her very reluctant to let anyone but Alastar close to her. In fact, her regular intake of Alastar's blood has made her a very devoted assistant, just hovering on the border of being possessive of Alastar. He, in turn, likes dressing her up for formal events when he needs a partner to accompany him.

In the past, especially when she just arrived in Berlin around 1980, her appearance has created some problems when people mistook her for japanese, though nowadays this seems to be less of a problem. The fact that she speaks fluent german by now is probably a factor in that as well.

Next to German, Mei-yin speaks her mother tongue Cantonese, and English with a Hong Kong accent. Next to the normal strength-enhancing effects of vitae on ghouls, Alastar has trained Mei-yin in the discipline of Celerity.
