Adala wollschlaeger is the day-to-day manager, colloquially called Madame, of Lippe the brothel owned by Alastar Mac Caoileann. Standing at 1 meter 85, wearing an eye patch, and with a voice that can easily carry over a street filled with the sound of passing cars, she has a commanding presence. The woman, who seems to be in her mid thirties, usually dresses in a warm beige dress combined with beige eye patch to complement her long brown hair. She considers her appearance of importance, but never lets it get in the way of practicality.
Her past is a whirl of activity in the theatre acting scene, where she had a modest career as actress. Her stature and voice gave her a strong presence in the theatre. That was, until she lost her left eye in a factory accident at the age of 28 while she was inspecting the machine floor as part of her floor manager job. The immediate end of her acting career and the recovery process of this accident left her jobless, moneyless and friendless.
In the next five years of her life she drifted from job to job to make ends meet, never settling for something and always anxious to move on. Most of the jobs had something to do with people management, but she was never able to hold down the job for long. Over time she drifted from normal jobs to more and more shifty occupations, eventually even doing a stint as a bouncer for a night club, where her length and command voice gave her a definitive edge. Her previous job was as discrete security for a brothel.
Her meeting Alastar was pure luck, really. She was just 'let go' from her previous position, and got into a bit of a brawl with her ex-colleagues when she insulted her ex-employer by calling him a cowardly pimp and shouting that she “could do a better job with one eye, than could with both his eyes open”. For unclear reasons, though his smirk at the insult might have had something to do with it, the resultant brawl included Alastar and ended with carrying the bleeding, but still raving woman away as the police turned around the corner. Following the fourth tennet of the Dance of the Thrashing Dragon, “Help all living things thrive”, he offered the aggressive woman the opportunity to make good on her taunt and start as the madame of Lippe.
She proved to be a very efficient and reliable madame that took to the job with zeal, placing the well-being of the girls above her own safety. Two years after hiring her, Alaster convinced her to become a Ghoul; not only to ensure her loyalty, but to make sure that she actually ends up being the victorious party whenever it comes to blows with some John that doesn't act according to the rules of 'good behaviour' as Adala calls them.
Adala is aware that the Franz Reismann, a sometime-visitor of Lippe, is the chief of police of the Charlottenburg, and has used this fact in the past to defuse a potentially difficult situation simply by placing a call on Alastar's behalf. She knows that this is not the normal operating procedure, but Alastar has since made sure to inform the chef of police that she is employed by him and could call in case of emergencies – an arrangement that suits both the chef and Adala fine, obviously for different reasons.
